The Human Functioning Standard
A Practical Framework for Understanding How Well Your Life Is Functioning
We often measure our lives through success, happiness, achievement or wellbeing. The Human Functioning Standard (HFS) starts with a more fundamental question:
How well are you actually functioning?
Healthy functioning supports our ability to look after ourselves, manage everyday life,
fulfil responsibilities, maintain relationships, respond to challenges, grow and live meaningfully.
The Human Functioning Standard (HFS), created by Hossein Tajbakhsh, brings these different parts of life together within one practical, evidence-informed framework.
Its purpose is simple:
To help you understand how well the important areas of your life are functioning and identify what may deserve your attention.
What Is Healthy Functioning?
Healthy functioning does not mean having a perfect life.
It means being reasonably able to manage yourself and your life in a healthy, balanced, meaningful and sustainable way, within the reality of your individual circumstances.
The HFS recognises that everyone has different strengths, challenges, responsibilities, resources and circumstances. It therefore assesses functioning — not your worth as a person. And the goal is not to achieve the highest possible score.
Healthy functioning — not perfection — is the standard.
The 10 Areas of Human Functioning
The HFS looks at your life across 10 interconnected domains:
1. Physical Health
How well your physical health, energy and health-related behaviours support everyday life.
2. Mental & Emotional Wellbeing
How effectively you manage emotions, stress and psychological demands.
3. Daily Living & Self-Care
How effectively you look after yourself and manage everyday responsibilities.
4. Work, Study & Productivity
How effectively and sustainably you fulfil meaningful work, study or productive responsibilities.
5. Relationships & Social Connection
The quality of your relationships, communication, connection and support.
6. Financial Stability
How effectively you manage financial needs, responsibilities and resources.
7. Character & Self-Management
How effectively you manage your behaviour, decisions, responsibilities and personal standards.
8. Learning & Personal Growth
Your ability to continue learning, adapting, reflecting and developing.
9. Meaning & Contribution
Your sense of purpose, values, contribution and connection to something beyond yourself.
10. Environment & Life Circumstances
How far your surroundings, resources, opportunities and circumstances support or restrict healthy functioning.
Together, these domains provide a broader picture of how your life is functioning as a whole.
How the HFS Works
The HFS uses a simple 0–4 scale across the different areas of functioning:
0 — Severely Impaired
Healthy functioning is substantially compromised.
1 — Poor Functioning
Significant difficulty is limiting healthy functioning.
2 — Below Healthy Functioning
Some functioning is present, but meaningful improvement may be beneficial.
3 — Healthy Functioning
Functioning is generally healthy, balanced and sustainable.
4 — Sustainable Strength
This area is functioning consistently and sustainably above the healthy benchmark.
The target is 3 — Healthy Functioning. A 4 is a strength to recognise and use, not a standard everyone is expected to achieve. Your individual pattern of results matters more than simply achieving a high overall score.
From Assessment to Understanding
The Human Functioning Assessment gives you a structured opportunity to step back and look at your life from a wider perspective.
Your results can help you:
-
recognise existing strengths;
-
identify areas below the healthy benchmark;
-
notice where circumstances may be affecting your functioning; and
-
consider what may deserve your attention.
The assessment provides a snapshot of your self-reported functioning at this point in your life. It is not a judgement, diagnosis or permanent label.
Understanding Is the Beginning
Two people can receive the same score for completely different reasons.
That is why knowing what is not functioning well does not automatically tell you why — or what you should do about it.
HFS Coaching can help you explore your results more deeply, identify what may be affecting your functioning, decide what deserves priority and develop practical, realistic and sustainable ways forward. Understand first. Then improve what matters.
